Derek Domino, a native of Parkland, Fla., serves as both the interim Athletics Director and the head coach of the Silver Lake College men's basketball team.
The 2017-2018 season is Coach Domino's first season as Athletics Director and third season at the helm of the basketball team. In addition, he was the lead assistant coach for Silver Lake College in 2014-2015, and for two seasons he assisted in coaching basketball in south Florida.
Prior to coaching, he played four years of college basketball at the NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III level before transferring to Silver Lake College, where he was the starting point guard and team captain during his senior year.
As a college senior, he ranked second in the nation in assists per game (6.4) before injuring his hamstring, which caused him to miss eight of the team's last 11 games.
"Missing those games offered me a new perspective and fueled my desire to get into coaching," Coach Domino said. He also credits his father (Donald Domino), Dee Sasser and Phil Budervic as mentors who have supported him in running a college basketball program.
Coach Domino graduated high school from Coral Springs Christian Academy in Coral Springs, Fla. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and a Master’s Degree in Management & Organizational Development from Silver Lake College.
Tommy Bentley is in his first year as an assistant coach for the Silver Lake College men's basketball team.
Coach Bentley played for the Lakers during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons before using up his available eligibility. He's concluding his studies this year at Silver Lake College as an education major.
The Milwaukee native played his high school basketball at Milwaukee Madison High School. Over the years he also ran basketball camps at one of the YMCAs in the Milwaukee area.
Coach Bentley knows the challenges of being a college student-athlete when it comes to balancing academics and athletics and developing as a person both on and off the court. "I want to help Coach Domino because I feel I can relate to some of the players and help them; understand and let them know that it will be hard," he said. "Also, I want to let the players know I was once in their shoes, and it takes time and patience."
Coach Bentley said his favorite coach is Coach John Calipari of the University of Kentucky.
Jonathan Billingslea, a former student-athlete at Silver Lake College, is in his first season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Lakers men's basketball team.
