Michaela Newberry, a native of Iron Mountain, Mich., is the new head coach of the Silver Lake College women's volleyball team, starting with the 2017 season. She recently concluded her first year as the Lakers' assistant coach.
Coach Newberry has been involved with volleyball for most of her life (her mother, Jeanne, has been a high school varsity volleyball coach for two decades). She played volleyball throughout middle school and high school, and she went on to help her mother during camps and practices.
"I enjoy the energy the sport brings," Coach Newberry said about volleyball. "So much excitement goes on when you are a part of watching a good play happen."
In high school, Coach Newberry was named to the All Region Team and All Conference Team.
"I look forward to coaching at Silver Lake College, because I believe I have a lot of knowledge that would help players reach their athletic potential and I hope to share the love of the game with them," she said.
Coach Newberry received her undergraduate degree in psychology with a minor in counseling from Lake Superior State University (where she was also a standout student-athlete), and she's pursuing a master's degree in education counseling. Her hobbies include running, swimming, kayaking and painting.
Meghan Walsh, a freshman from Oshkosh West High School (Oshkosh, Wis.), is in her first year as manager for the Silver Lake College women's volleyball team.
Her parents are Lisa and Kevin Walsh, and she's majoring in accounting.
Some of Meghan's "favorites" include Aly Raisman (favorite athlete), Patrick Dempsey (favorite actor), "A Walk to Remember" (favorite movie) and "Grey's Anatomy" (favorite TV show).
